Major Insurance Company Expedites Roll-Out to Obstetricians of LMS Technology

In February of this year, MDAdvantage announced it would undertake a 12-month assessment of LMS’ CALM Shoulder Screen technology. However, it has taken only three months for the second largest malpractice insurance provider in New Jersey to come to the decision to offer the technology to all of its insured Obstetricians. MDAdvantage determined the technology will benefit its clients and also support patient safety and best practices in medicine.

As a result of this determination, MDAdvantage has given the green light to all of its insured obstetricians to use CALM Shoulder Screen and is offering them a discount on malpractice insurance premiums just for using the technology.

Shoulder dystocia is defined as a halt in a delivery because the baby's shoulder is wedged behind the mother's pubic bone, due usually to the baby being too big to fit through the birth canal.
  • Shoulder dystocia occurs about 0.4 to 3 times per 1000; vaginal births
  • Short mothers, maternal obesity and large babies are the principal risk factors;
  • Rates of maternal obesity (a risk factor) are increasing;
  • Permanent weakness or paralysis of the arm occurs in a portion of these deliveries.
  • Medical liability payouts for a baby with subsequent disability average around $500,000.

CALM Shoulder Screen is a program that assesses the risk of shoulder dystocia with injury. When tested in a series of over 200 cases of shoulder dystocia that resulted in permanent injury and went to litigation, CALM Shoulder Screen detected 61%.
