Icron's Wireless USB Technology Announced

Rob Eisses told us when he first assumed the role of President and CEO that he would have an 802.11 wireless prototype product ready by the end of the year. Most savvy investors know what to do with management’s timelines and projections, but in Mr. Eisses’ case we are ecstatic to tell you that he met his objective when and how he said he would!!

Icron announced the world's first wireless USB 2.0 hub based on an industry standard 802.11g radio, called the WiRanger hub, just in time to show it off at this year’s Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas. Click here to read the release and view pictures.

While at the show, Icron was able to demonstrate wireless USB connectivity at distances of 20 meters plus! Needless to say, this impressed many existing and potential customers that are now in talks with Icron.

From an aesthetic point of view, Icron’s WiRanger hub works in very much the same way as its competitors purport their solutions will work (which have been continually delayed and have not yet reached the market). It allows people to wirelessly connect USB devices such as printers, scanners, web cams, hard drives and MP3 players to their PC’s or MAC’s within a room or throughout their home, office or factory.

Icron's WiRanger Cable Free USB 2.0 hub offers a four-port hub and dongle set that will enable true plug-and-play wireless connectivity without additional software drivers, for any USB device.

Icron expects availability in early spring and we believe they will meet the objective by the end of Q1.

You may be asking what the benefits of using 802.11 over UWB would be?

802.11 standard radio is proven technology. We know it works. People use this radio tech all the time for wireless Internet, which means the WiRanger should have immediate and global market acceptance. UWB is developing and has been for years, but is not really in the market at this point.

802.11 currently has a better range (distance where it can transfer data) than competing solutions. Also the newest version 802.11n will provide data rates that exceed most, if not all, current USB device requirements.

Icron has stated that “this product will be the first in a growing family of Cable Free USB 2.0 solutions utilizing a variety of wireless technologies including UWB and 802.11 to meet different application requirements in the industrial, military, prosumer, medical and commercial markets!”
